[PROBLEMS] To provide a method for satisfactorily producing a polymer electrolyte membrane electrode assembly with improved reliability and durability, using an aromatic hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membrane having excellent performance. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A method for producing a polymer electrolyte membrane electrode assembly by a hot press process, characterized by using an aromatic hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membrane having an ion exchange capacity of 0.4 to 2.3 meq/g and an initial softening temperature of 110 to 180°C as measured based on the dynamic viscoelasticity, the hot press temperature being set within the range from -30°C to +30°C relative to the initial softening temperature of the polymer electrolyte membrane.
