According to the invention, original information is coded in a main channel and a sub channel to generate a signal for transmission, the sub channel being more robust with regard to channel effects. On the receiver side, when the reception quality is above a threshold necessary to carry out a successful decoding of the main channel the main channel is reproduced. Should the reception quality fall below said threshold the sub channel is reproduced, which can have fewer bits than the main channel and is hence a correspondingly lower quality representation of the original information than the main channel.
