The method involves detecting rates at outputs of corresponding light sensor arrangements (114, 116) of a velocity detection system (100), where the arrangements are separated by a preset distance. A difference between the rates at the outputs of the respective arrangements is determined, and is compared with a preset difference threshold. Time elapsed between the detection of the rates at the outputs of the sensor arrangements is identified based on the comparison. A relative velocity between a surface (102) and the system is calculated by utilizing the elapsed time and preset distance.
