The present invention relates to a process for the separation of vinyl acetate from a gas mixture formed in the gas phase in the conversion of ethylene with acetic acid and oxygen over palladium or palladium containing catalysts, wherein part of the bottom product removed from the distillation column in which pure vinyl acetate is produced is heated by the water vapour-saturated CO₂ stream which is obtained from the carbon dioxide desorber, and is fed back to the distillation column in which pure vinyl acetate is produced.
