PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader capable of preventing a naturally falling document from falling out of the reader even if the document is raised by a vacuum suction caused by negative pressure produced when a document pressing plate is lifted to open in a copying machine or the like. SOLUTION: The document reader 100 is composed of: a document placing plate 18; the document pressing plate 19; and a document upper unit opening/closing detection mechanism having an actuator 22. In the document reader 100, when the document pressing plate 19 is open, the leading end of the actuator 22 projects higher than the upper face of the document placing plate 18. When the document placing plate 19 is closed, the lower face of the document pressing plate 19 comes into contact with the reading end and moves backward. In addition, inter-hinge spaces 28 surrounded by hinges 21, the rear edge of the document placing plate 18 and the rear edge of the document pressing plate 19 are formed.
