PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a panel material having less discoloration due to ultraviolet light and shrinkage due to heat, and exhibiting a texture nearly infinitely close to that of the Japanese paper. SOLUTION: This panel material obtained by impregnating a sheet substrate material made of slurry containing basalt fibers and inorganic fibers with a thermosetting resin and hardened, is formed with a pattern of the Japanese paper by the sheet substrate material and the thermosetting resin. In the panel material, the basalt fiber is preferably contained in an amount of 15-65 mass% based on the total of the basalt fibers and inorganic fibers.
