PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten extension time of a lens unit while avoiding collision between lens units during the extension operation of a lens unit. SOLUTION: The extension of first group lens barrel 111 located in the front is first started from the collapsed position of the lens barrel 111. The extension of a second group lens barrel 112 located behind the first lens barrel 111 in the direction of the optical axis is started after the detection of the intermediate position of an operating stroke from the collapsed position of the first group lens barrel 111 to a photographing position. The second group lens barrel 112 is then extended to a position where it does not collide with the first group lens barrel 111, and then the extension operation is once stopped. Subsequently, after the first group lens barrel 111 is extended to the photographing position, the extension of the second group lens barrel 112 to the photographing is started again.
