A pile (27) of sheets is held by a separator/feeder and a vibrator (22) is brought into contact with a first region of the pile (27) with a first contact pressure. High frequency vibrations are applied from the vibrator (22) to the sheet (29) of paper-like medium under this condition. A takeout mechanism (31) is brought into contact with and pressed against the pile (27) with a second contact pressure and sheets (29) of paper-like medium are taken out one by one from the top surface of the pile (27) by the takeout mechanism (31). A first sensor (24) detects the position of the vibrator (22) and outputs a first detection signal, while a second sensor (25) detects the uppermost surface of the pile (27) and outputs a second detection signal. A control section (101) selects first and second contact pressures according to the first and second detection signals and maintains the first and second contact pressures respectively within first and second predetermined ranges. Then, the separator/feeder reliably provides a loosening effect of loosening sheets of paper-like medium by means of vibrations regardless of the type of sheets of paper-like medium. Thus, it is possible to provide a separator/feeder for sheets of paper-like medium that can prevent feeding sheets of paper-like medium in duplicate. |
