[Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing for vehicles is operated automatically by a fan upon or geared to the driven shaft which actuates a pneumatic switch which distributes current selectively to the valves of engine-suction servomotors, one for each speed. The fan 34, Fig. 7, on a shaft 2 geared to the driven shaft 59, Fig. 2, sucks air in through a sieve 36 and sends it by a pipe 37 past a relief valve 45, Fig. 3, which is connected to the accelerator to steady the pneumatic distributor, and into a coil expansible tube 39 of the distributor 38. The tube 39 is connected at 42a to a switch arm 42 which moves over contacts a .. d corre. sponding to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th speeds. A selective switch box 46, Fig. 5, secured to the dash-board has contacts N, A for neutral and for automatic action, and others R, 1 .. 4 for reverse and for the four forward speeds, which can thus be operated manually. Current from a battery &c. passes through the switch box 46, then through the distributor 38 to a pair of control coils 22, Fig. 1, of a servomotor which pulls a control rod 17 corresponding to the speed selected. There is a servomotor, a rod 17, and a pivoted lever 14 for each of the five clutches 3 shown in Fig. 2. These are plate clutches which overlap in action and the gearing shown has a driving- shaft I, a countershaft 2, and a driven shaft 59. The tooth reaction of helical gears 1b, 1c, 1d for first, second, and third speeds tends to keep the plate clutch engaged. Ihe last clutch 3 on the right is for direct drive. Each rod 17 is pulled to effect a speed by two pistons 18, Fig. 1, which come into action in succession to cushion the start of the stroke. Valve doors 29 on these pistons by gradually covering suction ports 27 cushion the end of the stroke. The engine suction is applied at 26 and the coils 22 act by lifting two leather-covered valves 23 admitting suction under two pistons 21 on valve stems 24 which are thus sucked downwards against springs 25. Piston valves 19 on the stems 24 close two air inlets 28, one to each cylinder 72, and then other valves 20, one after the other, open the outlets 27 to the main suction ports 26. The gear clutch corresponding is now in and remains so until the fan 34 causes the distributor arm 42 to move to another contact whereupon the rod 17 previously in use is returned to the right by a spring 30, Fig. 1, and another motor acts. The electric current passes from the coils 22 of the motor in action from a trailing connection 71 through a lamp and back to the battery, and the lamps are of different colours to indicate which speed is in operation at the time. An engine clutch is used with this transmission.</p>
