A method for monitoring operation of a press assembly 80 with a removable die 84 includes establishing a baseline vibration level for a first location 104 on the press assembly, measuring vibrations at the first location 104 (e.g. at or near the die assembly 84) and also at further locations 120,122 (e.g. on motor 102 or slide drive system 90) during operation of the press, correlating the vibrations at the first location with vibrations at the further locations and establishing a relationship between the vibrations at the first 104 and further 120,122 locations. Once the relationship between the vibrations of the first sensor 104 and the further sensors 120,122 has been established the first sensor 104 can be removed leaving permanently mounted sensors 120,122. The vibrations measured the further locations 120,122 can then be compared to the baseline vibration level to determine if adjustments to the press operation need to be made to keep the vibration below a level which will lead to premature failure of a press component, or if certain press elements will need to be replaced prior to their expected life span. |
