Personal computing device 300 (e.g. mobile phone, laptop computer) includes battery (303), power measurement unit (306), display 310, and microprocessor (307) for controlling device 300 in accordance with an operating system. Power measurement unit (306) provides an indication of the amount of energy remaining in the battery and the current power consumption of the device (measured in Watts). A user is provided with an indication of the power being used 312 and an indication of the battery capacity 311. Power usage indicator 312 may be colour coded and may take the form of a plurality of bars, the number of bars being determined by a power calculation mechanism of the operating system. An audible sound may also indicate current power usage. Alternatively, power capacity indicator 311 may be coloured to indicate battery power usage, avoiding separate indicator 312. Thus, a user can see the power consumed in different operational modes and avoid high-power consuming operations, extending battery life. |
