It is intended to provide an a-glucosidase inhibitor which is new and has a high activity. Accordingly, after a root or/and aerial part of Salacia reticulata is extracted with water, insoluble components are removed by adding ethanol. Then, separation by fractionation was carried out using a synthetic adsorbent HP-20 (manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation) column, an amino column or an ODS column, whereby a compound represented by the chemical formula (Kagaku 1) is obtained. This compound has an excellent a-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and is provided as a new anti-diabetic agent, or a health food capable of exhibiting a sugar absorption inhibitory effect. |
