A composition suitable for treatment of an aqueous liquid to remove a dissolved substance therefrom is comprised of water-insoluble, sub-micron composite particles having a non-magnetic core (e.g. of alumina or ferrihydrite) with an active surface layer of magnetite and/or maghemite. Preferably the particles have a size in the range of 0.03-0.5žm, most preferably about 0.05/žm. The particles may be used for treating an aqueous liquid to reduce the amount of a dissolved substance therein by contacting the liquid with the particles. The particles may be separated by magnetism from the liquid. The method is particularly suitable for the removal of dissolved organic carbon such as dissolved humic compounds (e.g. humic and fulvic acids) from water that is to be chlorinated and used as drinking water. |
