The gantry surrounds a cylindrical radiation area (6) with a movable base segment (22), and a patient table is positioned in the radiation area. The base segment is coupled with the gantry such that the base segment resides in a horizontal neutral position during rotation of the gantry and performs a movement around the rotary axis when needed.
