A personal authentication apparatus is provided to perform personal authentication without giving the pressure feeling to the user due to a shape of the apparatus, thereby opening the presentation position of a living body and realizing a perfect non-contact type vein authentication. A light source(3) emits infrared light. An input interface(2) has an image pickup device(4) for picking up an image of a vein of a living body by the infrared light. A control unit controls the intensity of the light. An image-calculating unit extracts and authenticates features of the image. A positioning unit presents the living body. The light source is disposed at the front of the living body. Both the light source and the image pickup device are installed in such a positional relationship that the light of the light source gives no adverse influence on the image pickup device. The light source is installed in such a direction that the light of the light source gives no adverse influence on the image pickup device.
