A tieback connector for attaching a riser to a subsea production assembly includes a main body adapted to be coupled to the subsea production assembly having a central passageway sufficiently large to pass an end of the riser stringtherein and a connector positioner (54) coupled to the main body. The connector positioner is adapted to secure the tieback connector around a circumferential surface of a wellhead 24. The tieback connector comprises an aligning extension portion defined by a funnel-shaped tip, which aids alignment of the riser terminus during landing. The tieback connector further comprises a ring-shaped gripping band 56 having opposed flanges, to which are connected hydraulic cylinders which, when activated, cause the connector positioner to grip the circumferential surface of the wellhead 24. |
