A touch screen initialization setup method of a portable terminal is provided to be capable of controlling an offset between a display unit and a touch pad by using patterns displayed on the display unit during initialization of the terminal, thereby automatically setting the initialization of a touch screen. In case of an initialization request of a portable terminal, the terminal is initialized(S100,S101). A pattern set on a display unit is displayed(S102,S103). A coordinates value of the displayed pattern is received from a touch pad to compare the received coordinates value with a coordinates value of the display unit(S104-S106). An offset between the display unit and the touch pad is controlled according to the compared results(S107-S109).
