<p>Vinyl cyclohexane polymers of molecular weight more than 10,000 are produced by hydrogenating a homo-, cograft-polymer of styrene or a mixture of polymers containing styrene and of molecular weights more than 10,000 in the liquid phase with hydrogen at 50 DEG -270 DEG C. and at more than 170 atmospheres in the presence of an unsupported catalyst consisting of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic System with an atomic weight of more than 58. Hydrogenation is carried out using a melt or solution, e.g. 3-15% polymer in hydrocarbons and/or saturated ethers or alcohols. The polystyrene may be prepared by thermal or ionic polymerization in emulsion or suspension. Copolymers may contain butadiene, isobutylene, vinyl toluene, a -methyl styrene, divinylbenzenes, ethylene, propylene, acrylic or methacrylic esters, vinyl esters or ethers, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or N-vinyl carbazole. The catalysts may be present as powders, colloidally dispersed or unsupported sintered, e.g. Raney Ni or Co. The process may be continuous, e.g. using a suspended catalyst which is recycled. The vinyl cyclohexane polymer may be pressed into sheets or used for moulded articles.</p> |
