The device (1) has a plate (12) mounted in translation with respect to a support plate (9) along an axis (13) perpendicular to a slot (11) of the support plate. Two activating units (22, 24) respectively activate two plates (12, 16) in two opposite sliding directions (23, 25). The unit (22) displaces a striking plate (19) to disengage a zone of the striking plate beyond a hook and permits folding of a backrest (2). The unit (24) disengages the striking plate from adjusting notches (17) of the plate (16) and adjusts inclination of the backrest.
