An apparatus and a method for restoring an image based on self-training are provided to acquire a good image by removing the limitation in the number of pairs of patches in the aspect of system resources. A training module(210) extracts a training image patch from an inputted image. An image combining module(250) combines the inputted image to an image of high resolution based on the extracted training image patch. The training image patch includes a pair of the first and second image patches. The first image patch is the first edge image patch extracted from an image of low resolution corresponding to the input image, and the second image patch is the second edge image patch extracted from an image according to the difference between the input image and the image of low resolution. The first edge image patch is an edge image patch whose low frequency component was removed and which has been normalized to correct contrast.
