PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and image forming method using liquid developer, by which the compression of toner is kept constant by a simple configuration and an image of high image quality can be obtained. SOLUTION: In the image forming method using liquid developer, the liquid developer in which toner particles composed of a coloring agent and a resin are dispersed in liquid carrier is used. The developing method has: a developing roller which uses the liquid developer in which the toner particles are dispersed in the liquid toner carrier and to which the liquid developer regulated to a fixed quantity by a toner supply roller and regulating blade is transferred; a compressing member disposed opposite the developing roller; and a photoreceptor on which an electrostatic latent image is developed by the developing roller. The compressing member has the function of compressing the solid content to the developing roller side by applying an electric field to the liquid developer on the developing roller. Development currents flowing in the developing roller and photoreceptor are measured when a prescribed image is formed. The intensity of an electric field applied to the compressing member is controlled so that the result of the measurement may have a required value. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
