PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the dispersion of the place of a discriminating section for detecting the standby place of an image sensor in an image reader, to improve an accuracy on the detection of the standby place of the image sensor and to surely read an original as an object. SOLUTION: The image reader has the image sensor 5 moved along the original placing surface 3 of a reading unit 2 and reading the original, the discriminating section 6 fitted near the standby place of the image sensor 5 on the outside of the original reading region of the image sensor 5 and a decision means deciding the reaching of the image sensor 5 at the standby place when the image sensor 5 reads the discriminating section 6. The discriminating section 6 is formed integrally on the rear of the top plate 4 of the reading unit 2. Accordingly, the size of the discriminating section 6 is fixed, the dispersion of the place of the discriminating section 6 is suppressed, the accuracy on the detection of the standby place of the image sensor 5 is improved and the original as the object can be read surely.
