PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot dip coated steel member having satisfactory plating appearance, plating adhesion and workability. SOLUTION: The hot dip coated steel member has a plated layer, the plated layer having a composition comprising, by mass, 8 to 60% Al, 1 to 10% Mg and the balance Zn with inevitable impurities and having, at the boundary between the plating and matrix, an Fe-Al compound layer with an average thickness of 0.1 to 5.0μm. Further, a method of producing a hot dip coated steel member having excellent plating appearance, plating adhesion and workability is characterized in that Cu and Sn are substitution-precipitated on the surface of a steel member, and thereafter, the steel member is dipped into a hot dip plating bath comprising, by mass, 8 to 60% Al and 1 to 10% Mg, and the balance Zn with inevitable impurities.
