PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition excellent in workability in rubber processing and providing a pneumatic tire keeping abrasion resistance and having good wet grip performance and the pneumatic tire obtained by using the rubber composition as a tread and having above performances. SOLUTION: The rubber composition comprises (A) 100 pts.mass rubber component containing (A-1)≥60 mass% solution polymerization styrene-butadiene copolymer rubber having≥1,000,000 weight average molecular weight, (B) 0-50 pts.mass carbon black, (C) 95-300 pts.mass silica and (D) 10-80 pts.mass inorganic filler having a specific structure and (E) a silane coupling agent composed of a protected mercaptosilane having a specific strucure and contained in an amount of 5-30 mass% based on silica of the component C.
