PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect paper directed in an opposite direction without any help of a person when overlapping folded and bound paper by arranging the directions to be uniform. SOLUTION: This paper direction detecting device has V-shaped pressing members 10a and 10b holding a plurality of sheets of paper having first side parts which is constituted by overlapping a plurality of paper piece parts and do not open between the plurality of paper piece parts and second side parts which are opposed to the first side parts and open between at least a part of the paper piece parts of the plurality of paper piece parts from front and rear sides, and air supply device 61 and air supply nozzle 62 for spraying air to a region held by the pressing members 10a and 10b from the first side parts of the paper overlapped in a prescribed direction of the plurality of sheets of paper.
