PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque step relaxing device for an engine, which relaxes torque step. SOLUTION: This device is provided with: an ignition means 14 adjusting ignition timing; a valve gear 37 installed in an exhaust gas passage 30 flowing exhaust gas from a combustion chamber 11 and changing over the exhaust gas passage 30 to a passage 31 of large passage resistance and a passage 32 of small passage resistance according to an engine operation condition; a first intake air quantity detection means 25 installed in the intake air passage 21 in an upstream of a throttle valve 23; a second intake air quantity detection means 26 installed in the intake air passage 21 in a downstream of the throttle valve 23; and an operation control means 50 changing over control from normal control of ignition timing executing control, based on intake air quantity determined by the first intake air quantity detection means 25 at a time of change over from the passage 31 of large passage resistance to the passage 32 of small passage resistance to torque step relaxing controls S103-S109 tentatively retarding ignition timing and reducing engine output, based on intake air quantity determined by the first and the second intake air quantity detection means 25, 26.
