<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a host device easily developing affinity to a conventional file system, and capable of achieving large-capacity and high-speed writing. <P>SOLUTION: This host device is inserted with a memory system having a semiconductor memory and a controller controlling the semiconductor memory. The host device is mounted with a file management system for allocating a cluster defined in a FAT (file allocation table) file system to writing data, and managing the data allocated to the cluster by use of management data including a directory entry and a file allocation table defined in the FAT file system. The directory entry includes: a root directory entry that is entry information of a topmost root directory; and a subdirectory entry that is entry information of a subdirectory belonging to the root directory.
