PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sleepiness detection device for improving the detecting precision of sleepiness by reducing the erroneous recognition of the generation of sleepiness to be generated due to a downward look. SOLUTION: This sleepiness detection device is configured to take a photographic image by a camera (S110), and to calculate the arousal of a driver based on the circumstances of the blink of the driver to be detected from the photographic image (S150). Furthermore, after an approximate curve showing the outline shape of the eyelid of the driver is calculated by a downward look detection processing, whether or not the driver is having a downward look is decided (S170). In sleepiness warning processing, when the decision of the downward look detection processing shows that the approximate curve is downward convex, it is decided that the driver is having a downward look, and the previously calculated arousal is corrected so that the deterioration of the arousal due to the downward look can be offset (S190), and the sleepiness of the driver is detected by using the corrected arousal (S200).
