PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbonized fabric by which the carbonized fabric having excellent electroconductive characteristics, heat resistance, electromagnetic wave absorbency etc., and excellent mechanical strength and flexibility is relatively easily and economically be produced. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbonized fabric uses a woven fabric, a knitted fabric or a woven and knitted fabric composed of cellulosic fiber yarns as a raw material fiber fabric, heats and carbonizes the raw material fiber fabric, and produces the carbonized fiber fabric. The method includes restraining and holding the raw material fiber fabric with a moisture content less than 25% in a dry state from either one of the longitudinal or the transverse direction of the fabric, directly heating up the fabric in an oxidizing atmosphere under an oxygen partial pressure of 50 mmHg or greater at 50-200°C/h to a temperature region of 250-450°C, then continuously heating up the fabric in a nonoxidizing atmosphere under an oxygen partial pressure less than 50 mmHg to a final heating temperature region of 1,000-1,600°C at a heating rate of 50-200°C/h and subjecting the fabric to heating where the fabric is held at the final heating temperature for a prescribed time in a heating furnace.
