PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe natural cockroach repellant utilizing volatiles obtained in wood artificial drying process and the like. SOLUTION: In some embodiments, Japan cedar green wood was dried by using an artificial dryer or the like under the condition of≤120°C heating temperature, so as to have a moisture content of wood≤20%. After starting the drying, water vapor containing volatiles derived from wood was collected with a water-cooling condenser to yield a condensate. As an essential oil from the condensate has proper volatility, it is useful as a cockroach repellant. As the smell of the oil has no irritant odor and exhibits mild fragrance inherent in the Japan cedar, the essential oil is suitably usable not only in ordinary homes but also in several sites such as buildings and hospitals.
