<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for adjusting toner density which enable toner density to be adjusted appropriately, by accurately detecting the density of a reference toner image formed on an image carrier means, regardless of the variations in sensor output due to the aging of the image carrier means or the variance in sensitivity of a sensor due to differences in devices. <P>SOLUTION: The device for adjusting toner density is equipped with an image density detection means of detecting the image density of a toner image that adheres to the image carrier means 51 to be transferred to a recording medium, and is so constituted that the position of the scanner pattern 100 of the image density detected by the image density detection means is the same position as that of an output pattern 101 detected by a toner density adjusting means 84.
