PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of paper powder during feeding of sheets, while preventing double feeding, in a feeder provided with a separating roller and a separating pad. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder 81 is provided with a separating part 20 for separating the sheets 100 of overlapped states one sheet by one sheet and a feeding roller 22 for feeding the sheets 100 separated in the separating part 20. The separating part 20 is provided with the separating roller 21 to be rotated and driven, the separating pad 31 to be pressed in relation to the separating roller 21, and a friction member 32 which can be brought into/out of contact with the sheets 100. When the sheets 100 separated by the separating part 20 reach the feeding roller 22, the driving of the separating roller 21 is released, the pressing of the separating pad 31 is released, and the friction member 32 is brought into contact with the next sheet 100.
