<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear motor for individually driving a multi-head movable element, and saving a space. <P>SOLUTION: The linear motor 1 includes a conduction control section 3, a length measurement section 4, a coil 5, and a magnet 7. The coil 5 comprises coils C1, C2, .... The magnet 7 includes a plurality of magnets M1, M2, ..., along one movement axis 12. The conduction control section 3 supplies a current to the coil Ci to make a conduction. A magnetic pole of the coil Ci is excited, and attracts the magnet Mk (k=1, 2, ...). The magnet Mk is moved on the coil Ci. The length measurement section 4 obtains positional information on the magnet Mk. When the magnet Mk is moved from the coil Ci to the coil Ci+1 or the coil Ci-1 adjacent to the coil Ci, the conduction control section 3 switches a current from the coil Ci to the coil Ci+1 or the coil Ci-1 adjacent to the coil Ci.
