PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a glass substrate for a magnetic disk which has low roughness and excellent flatness and is novel and improved by preventing generation of distortion and warpage in the glass substrate and to provide a manufacturing method of the magnetic disk. SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method of the glass substrate for the magnetic disk including a chemical strengthening step for performing chemical strengthening of the glass substrate by immersing the disk like glass substrate in a chemical strengthening liquid in which a chemical strengthening salt is thermally dissolved to perform ion exchange and a cooling step for cooling the glass substrate heated in the chemical strengthening step in such a state that the glass substrate is held by a glass substrate holder, a holding part 210 of the glass substrate holder 200 abuts a boundary part between a principal surface 12 and a chamfered surface 16 of the glass substrate 10 to hold the glass substrate by point contact.
