PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To start a setting work of documents in a short time after there are no documents in a document feeder capable of setting a large quantity of documents and reading the documents in an image scanner device, etc. SOLUTION: This document feeder 47 is provided with a document tray 11 capable of setting the documents 14 by overlapping the documents 14, a separating part 48 capable of separating the documents 14 one sheet by one sheet, a raising device 49 provided with an electric motor 15 for raising the document tray 11, and a document detection sensor 16 for detecting the presence or absence of the documents 14 in the document tray 11. The document feeder 48 supplies the documents 14, while separating the documents 14 by the separating part 48, in a state of the document tray 11 raised up to a separating position (a position where the documents 14 can be separated by the separating part 48) by the raising device 49. When the document detection sensor 16 detects no documents 14 in the document tray 11, the electric motor 15 and the document tray 11 are separated by disconnecting an electromagnetic clutch 31, and the document tray 11 is naturally dropped from the separating position.
