The invention relates to hydrophilic powdery particles (P) that: a) are obtainable using a non-ionic silane (S) which carries at least one non-hydrolyzable hydrophilic group (H), or the hydrolysis and condensation products thereof, a 5% by weight solution of the silane (S) or of the hydrolysis and condensation products thereof or a mixture consisting of silane (S) and the hydrolysis and condensation products thereof having a pH (in water) of not more than 8, and having a solubility of at least 5 g/l water at 20°C, and b) that can be dispersed in liquid media after their isolation as a powder, the average diameter of the particles (P) after dispersion of not more than 200 nm corresponding to 0.5 to 20 times the average diameter of the particles before their isolation as a powder and the average diameter of the particles (P) being determined as the average hydrodynamic equivalence diameter in the form of the Z average by photon correlation spectroscopy.
