<p>The present invention is concerned with a roll of a papermaking machine, which has an outermost surface layer which is made of ceramic and has an average surface roughness Ra of 0.01 to 0.30 µm. A method for producing the roll comprises the steps of forming an outermost surface layer made of ceramic on a roll support and finishing the outermost surface layer to an average surface roughness Ra of 0.01 to 0.30 µm.</p>
