<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing deterioration in writing accuracy due to the temperature rise in an optical unit, also, having improved maintainability, achieving good positioning of an optical unit and the miniaturization of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Regarding the image forming apparatus, with the setting of an optical writing device 70 in a writing operation position, the optical unit 71 is idly moved on a cover frame 52 while abutting the first reference position member 71a of an optical unit 71 to the regulating contact surface inside a housing, then, positioned. Further, first ventilation openings 52f and second ventilation openings 52g are formed in the cover frame 52 so as to face the air discharge fan 96 disposed on the housing in a state where the optical writing device is set in the writing operation position.
