PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide isolated nucleic acid molecules able to perform efficient modulation through hydroxylation of a flavonoid compound which is one of color types of plant tissues, e.g., petals, leaves, seeds and fruits.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to sequences encoding the flavonoid pathway metabolizing enzymes, more particularly, to flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase or derivatives thereof and nucleic acid molecules relating to their use in manipulating pigmentation in plants and other organisms.
