PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a plasma display panel which is a large-screen panel and has large inter-electrode capacity without increasing switching elements for current paths not for a discharging current accompanying light emission of the panel. SOLUTION: One field is composed of a plurality of sub-fields each having an initialization period, a write period, and a sustain period. In the first stage of the initialization period, each of switch units outputs a first voltage superposed on a reference potential and a reference potential setting circuit gently raises the reference potential. In a following second stage, the reference potential setting circuit varies the reference potential to a second voltage and in a subsequent third stage, some of the switch units output the reference potential and the remaining switch units output the reference potential a predetermined time later. In a fourth stage, the reference potential setting circuit gently lowers the reference potential and a discharge cell performs initializing operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
