PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine improved in engine performance such as a CO exhaust quantity, a torque variation characteristic and fuel consumption. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 has a cylinder 2, a piston 3 reciprocatibly stored in the cylinder 2, an injector 6 injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of the cylinder 2, and a spark plug 7 igniting the fuel in the cylinder 2. This internal combustion engine 1 also mixes intake air with the fuel by forming an intake air flow in the cylinder 2 in an intake stroke. In this internal combustion engine 1. the injector 6 has a first fuel injection hole and at least a pair of second fuel injection holes. The first fuel injection hole injects the fuel into the vicinity of an ignition point of the spark plug 7. The pair of second fuel injection holes inject the fuel in the tangent direction and the flowing direction of the intake air flow in the cylinder 2 in the two directions straddling a just under part of the ignition point of the spark plug 7.
