A navigation system (1) is provided with a printed matter (3) whereupon a pattern (16) of data which can be converted into the latitude and the longitude of each area by calculation is printed for each prescribed area by overlapping the pattern with a map (12); a portable reader (4) for reading the pattern (16); a calculating means (38) for calculating the longitude and the latitude from the data of the pattern (16) read by the portable reader (4); and a display means (39) which displays a map of a region including a point at the longitude and the latitude calculated by the calculating means (38). The data read from the printed matter is used for general purposes by a plurality of kinds of navigation systems without using database.
