PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium management method and a medium management program for managing a tape-shaped recording medium by connecting a backup center and the storage base of the tape-shaped recording medium and a management server for executing medium management through a network. SOLUTION: As shown in a figure 3, a management server 100 is provided with a transport stress evaluation value DB110 and an operation information DB120, and a medium management method comprises steps to receive the information of the tape ID of a tape-shaped recording medium designated by backup centers 300 and 400 and the consultation request of tape rewinding necessity/non-necessity or medium exchange necessity/non-necessity, to refer to the transport stress evaluation value DB and the operation information DB based on the consultation request, to determine reply content in response to the consultation request according to the referenced information with respect to the tape ID and predetermined regulations to be decided based on the consultation request, and to make a reply to the backup centers.
