PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately diagnose the damage to a member irradiated with neutrons in fewer steps for a short time. SOLUTION: In a method for diagnosing in-pile equipment irradiated with neutrons in a nuclear reactor, a small sample whose materials are much the same as those for a region of the in-pile equipment to be evaluated is placed near the region to be evaluated (Step S1) and the reactor is operated during a prescribed period (Step S2). Then, the small sample is recovered from the reactor and an indenting tool for measuring the hardness of the sample is squeezed into the surface of the sample to be measured in order to determine the relation between the indentation depth and load (Step S3). The relation between the hardness and the indentation load is determined on the basis of the indentation depth and load obtained in S3 (Step S4). Meanwhile, a master curve showing the relation between the solid state value and the hardness of the in-pile equipment is prepared (Step S5) sometime before Step S6. The mechanical properties of the region to be evaluated is evaluated on the basis of the relation between the hardness and the indentation load and the master curve (Step S6).
