PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection system capable of readily detecting the refractive index of a substance to be measured, using a simple constitution. SOLUTION: This refractive index detector 100 includes a light source 1, an optical fiber FB for sensor, a photodetector 5 and a signal processing circuit 6. The light from the light source passes through an optical fiber 2 and a sensor element 3, and is emitted from an optical fiber 4. The photodetector 5 outputs an electrical signal, having an intensity corresponding to the intensity of incident light. The signal processing circuit 6 calculates the refractive index of an object 7 to be detected on the basis of the intensity or change quantity of the electrical signal. Since the signal processing circuit 6 preliminarily stores the relation between the intensity of detection light and the refractive index, the refractive intensity of the object 7 to be detected can be calculated from the measured intensity of the detection light.
