An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to control the optical power of an exposure unit to be lower than normal exposure power in forming an image normally when a developer belt is formed to prevent the reversion of a cleaning blade, thereby minimizing that an exposure portion for forming the developer belt has influence on the formation of a next color image, and improving the quality of the image. A photosensitive medium(110) is charged by a charging member(140) at a predetermined potential. An exposure unit(130) exposes the photosensitive medium to change a charging level on the photosensitive medium. A developing unit(111~114) develops an image by color on the photosensitive medium. A transfer medium(120) receives the image formed on the photosensitive medium. A cleaning blade(150) cleans the transfer medium. A control unit(200) adjusts the optical power of the exposure unit and drives the exposure unit when a developer belt for lubrication is formed to lubricate between the cleaning blade and the transfer medium.
