An electronic device having a touch screen and an application execution method using the device are provided to assign a new function to the desktop by using a device feature of the touch screen, while a user can easily and conveniently enter a frequently used application by using the desktop. An area which does not display a function icon indicative of a predetermined function is touched on the desktop displayed on a touch screen(S300). According to the touch, a particular application is carried out(S310). A type of the particular application is set by a user.
