Method and apparatus for controlling spitting are provided to prevent a printer from being contaminated by allowing a carriage to perform spitting when the carriage is positioned in a service area for spitting. A method for controlling spitting comprises performing wiping operation(S300), extracting a control state of a motor controller(S310), checking whether the state is within a predetermined control speed section(S320), generating a control command signal to perform spitting and transmitting the signal to an ink cartridge(S330), generating a control command signal to fail to perform spitting and transmitting the signal to the ink cartridge(S340) and displaying a problem of performing spitting(S350).
