A method for the preparation of double metal cyanide catalysts (I) comprises: (a) mixing an aqueous solution of a metal salt of formula (II) with an aqueous solution of a cyano-metallic acid of formula (III), one or both of which may contain water-miscible organic ligand(s) of alcohol, aldehyde, ketones, ethers, polyethers, esters, ureas, amides, nitriles or sulphide; (b) adding ligand(s) to the resultant aqueous suspension if necessary; and (c) separating (I) from the suspension; M<1>m(X)n (II); HaM<2)<CN)b(A)c (III); M<1> = a metal ion of zinc Zn(II), iron Fe(II) or Fe(III), cobalt Co(III) or Co(II), nickel Ni(II), manganese Mn(II), tin(II), lead Pb(II), molybdenum Mo(VI) or Mo(VI), aluminium Al(III), vanadium V(IV) or V(V), strontium Sr(II), tungsten W(IV) or W(VI) or chromium Cr(II) or Cr(III); X, A = a halide, hydroxide, sulphate, carbonate, cyanate, thiocyanate, isocyanate, carboxylate, oxalate or nitrate anion; M<2> = a metal ion of Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Cr(III), Mn(II), Mn(III), rhodium Rh(III), ruthenium Ru(II), V(IV), V(V), Co(II) and Cr(II); m, n = the valencies of M<1> and X; and a, b, c = integers such that the cyanide compound is electro-neutral. |
