An apparatus for detecting input current of an inverter and a method thereof are provided to measure current inputted to an inverter by estimating an input current of power by using information used in the rotation control of the inverter without constructing additional complex circuits. An apparatus for detecting input current of an inverter includes a current detection unit(34), a voltage detection unit(36), and a control unit(40). The apparatus controls the rotation of the motor. The current detection unit detects a phase current of a motor(32). The voltage detection unit detects an inverter DC(Direct Current) voltage. The control unit calculates a command voltage from the detected DC voltage and estimates an output power from the calculated command voltage and the detected phase current.
